Portable Buildings in Texas: How Moveable Buildings Work

What makes a portable building portable? How moveable sheds, barns, and cabins are built, delivered, and set up on Texas properties, and what to plan for.

A portable building is a shed, barn, or cabin that’s built in one piece and delivered to your property finished, instead of being built on site from the ground up. That’s why they’re also called moveable or movable buildings. Here’s how they work and what to plan for if you’re buying one in Texas.

Built in one piece, delivered finished

A portable building is framed, roofed, sided, and trimmed before it leaves the shop or lot. When it reaches your property, the crew sets it in place and levels it. Delivery and setup are included up to 50 miles from our lots in Corinth and Corsicana.

What “portable” means for you

  • Faster to get: there’s no on-site construction crew working in your yard for days.
  • Predictable: you choose the size, style, colors, doors, and windows before it’s built, so you know what’s arriving.
  • Moveable later: because it arrives in one piece, a portable building can usually be moved again by a building mover if your plans change.

Styles of portable buildings

  • Utility buildings: classic storage with a gable roof, from 8×12 to 16×40.
  • Lofted barns: a barn roofline with overhead loft storage, in the same range of sizes. See lofted barn vs. storage shed.
  • Cottage utility buildings: compact buildings with a cottage look, from 8×12 to 10×24.
  • Cabins, porch models, and tiny home shells: larger buildings that owners finish as cabins, offices, or living space. See our tiny home shells guide.

Every size by style is in our shed sizes guide.

What to plan for

  • A level site: the building needs a level, stable spot.
  • A clear delivery route: gates, overhead lines, low branches, and soft ground all matter. Walk the route with our delivery checklist.
  • Local rules: many cities and counties have size limits or permit rules for accessory buildings. Our town pages link to the official offices for many Texas towns.
