Shed Sizes Guide: Utility, Lofted Barn & Cottage Sizes

Every shed size we build, by style: Utility, Lofted Barn, and Cottage Utility, from 8x12 to 16x40, plus what fits in each size and how to choose.

Picking a size is the biggest decision when you buy a shed. Too small and it’s full the first season; too big and it crowds the yard. Here’s every size in our current brochure, by style, and how to choose.

Sizes by style

We build three main styles:

  • Utility: a classic storage building with a gable roof, from 8×12 up to 16×40.
  • Lofted Barn: a barn roofline with overhead loft storage, in the same range of sizes.
  • Cottage Utility: a compact building with a cottage look, from 8×12 to 10×24.

What fits in each size

These are general starting points. Measure your own items before you decide.

  • 8×12 to 10×12: hand tools, a push mower, bikes, and garden supplies.
  • 10×16 to 10×24: a riding mower plus tools and shelves, or a potting shed with a work surface.
  • 12×20 to 14×20: a workshop with a bench, or storage for a mower, tiller, and seasonal gear.
  • 12×32 to 16×40: a large workshop, a home office, a cabin shell, or storage for equipment and supplies.

How to choose

  • Tape it out: mark the footprint at full size and set your largest items inside, leaving room for the door path. Our layout guide walks through it.
  • Check the door: compare your widest item to the door opening, not the building width.
  • Think about height: a lofted barn adds overhead storage. See lofted barn vs. storage shed.
  • Check the site and route: a larger building needs a level site and a clear delivery path. Use the delivery checklist.
  • Check local rules: many cities and counties have size limits or permit thresholds for accessory buildings. Our town pages link to the official offices for many Texas towns.

Colors, doors, and windows

Every size comes in 12 colors: Olive Green, Navy Blue, Light Stone, Mahogany, Black, Brown, Charcoal, White, Gray, Barn Red, Sandstone, Burnished Slate. Door options include 36″ solid and 9-lite doors in black or white, and window options include 2×3, 3×3, and 5-lite transom windows. Custom workbenches and shelving are available too.
